STAFF REPORT IBD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to auction the available spectrum bands in the wireless technology next month in order to increase the penetration of broadband internet services in the country.

“The available spectrum in 1.9 and 3.5 GHz band will be auctioned to new entrants in the broadband sector,” said an official of the telecom regulatory authority said.

The auction decision has been taken due to the growing demand of wireless broadband services, the official said adding it would allow new investors to come to Pakistans IT industry. As a result the customers will get good quality of services at affordable rates, he remarked.

The wireless technology has become popular in Pakistan for the provision of high speed internet and broadband services.  The wireless broadband technologies were deployed in the country in 2004 and its penetration of wireless broadband is increasing at a much faster rate as compared to fixed line in the recent years.
