Department of Remote sensing and GISc-Institute of Space Technology Karachi, in collaboration with Higher Education Commission (HEC), Inter – Islamic Network on Space Science and Technology (ISNET) organized a four day training course on Satellite Altimetry and Hydrological Applications from 26th September to 30th September, 2016. In this training course international expert from Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (National Research Council) in Pisa, Italy Dr. Stefano Vignudelli, and national experts from SUPARCO, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology and WAPDA delivered lectures on Altimetry and Hydrology and its application. Satellite altimetry is one of the recent techniques which is used for monitoring lake and reservoir volume and water level, river levels and discharges and flood modeling. Altimetry is a technique for measuring height. Temporary or permanent flooded areas can be observed and integrated into hydrological models. Altimetry can give hydrological information that can often be difficult to obtain due to inaccessibility of a region, the sparse distribution of gauge stations, or slow dissemination of data. The applications of satellite altimetry in hydrology are: monitoring height variations of lake and river, determination of sea level rise, sea ice thickness and glacier topography, identification of littoral and shallow-water regions and most fragile areas, and natural disasters.
