STAFF REPORT LHR: The use of technology can ensure public safety and improving quality of life in various ways. The Government of Punjab (GoP) mulls to chalk out Punjab Safe City Authority for the same theme in provincial metropolis. The project will be implemented by the end of this year.


The GoP has issued an ordinance for all relevant departments to convolve together in order to establish state of the art security surveillance system.


The Chief Minister Punjab, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said, “The safe city project is an attempt to ensure public security and facilitate law enforcement agencies to effectively maintain law and order through the use of technological aid”.


The sources apprise that more than 2,000 CCTV cameras would be installed on the main roads across the Lahore for the 24/7 surveillance. A cutting edge technology command, control, and communication system is also being established at the Qurban Police Lines in Lahore for said purpose.


Safe City concepts are not new in developed countries; many countries including various European countries have advanced surveillance systems in cities to effectively monitor the security situation in the city. This project will help improve security and law and order situation in city and such initiatives must be taken for other cities too.
