SMEDA, GIZ enabled textiles to save Rs 400m annually

STAFF REPORT LHR: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), in collaboration with German organization GIZ, has enabled the textile industry of Pakistan to save about Rs 400 million per annum by implementing Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Program (REEE).
“SMEDAs cooperation has been vital in successful implementation of energy efficiency activities of REEE Programme,” said Bernhard Mayhofer, Principal Advisor, REEE program – GIZ, Germany, during a recently meeting with Yousaf Naseem Khokhar, Chief Executive Officer of SMEDA.
As a result of our joint efforts in the textile sector, APTMA members have reported energy saving up to 83.5 million kwh per year, he said adding that basing upon the success such efforts in textile the ambit of REEE activities had been expanded to other industrial sectors including food and beverages, steel and glass sectors.
Mayhofer evinced keen interest to enhance scope of the mutual cooperation of SMEDA and GIZ for developing more structured approach for the existing activities as adding new areas such as promoting Renewable Energy technologies in the industry as well as productive use of renewable energy.
CEO SMEDA Yousaf Naseem Khokhar said that the programmes like REEE were the dire need in the prevailing energy crisis. He appreciated to include Food and Beverages, Steel and Glass sectors in the program He also assured to involve respective trade bodies in expansion program of REEE.
