STAFF REPORT LHR: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Mujahid Kamran has said the world is a battlefield and if we want to survive with respect, we will have to create new knowledge.


He said this while addressing the 10th biennial conference on microbes for future endeavours, organised by the universitys Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, in collaboration with the Pakistan Society for Microbiology, IBA and the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialisation.


He said the total US GDP was $17 trillion and it spent two to three percent on research and development per year while Pakistan had a gross domestic product of $250 billion only and spent only 0.1 percent. He also said young people would have responsibilities on their shoulders in the future so they should master their subjects and lauded the conference organisers for such a conference.


On the evolution of microbiology in Pakistan, Dr Shahana Arooj said the credit of introducing subject or microbiology in Pakistan went to Ahmed Ali Anwar who established departments in various universities.


Dr Anjum Nasim Sabri said the conference would provide a platform for young researchers to interact with scientists and senior researchers and share their experiences with one another.


She also announced to launch a research journal, saying gold medallists Dr Shahida Husnain and Dr AR Shakoori would be awarded to the distinctive students of MS and M Phil. Shields were later doled out to the guests.
