Suparco conducts training on safe communities thru RS, GIS

STAFF REPORT ISB: SUPARCO in collaboration with UNESCO has organized an international training and workshop on “Safe, connected communities against floods through Remote Sensing and GIS Tools” in Islamabad.


Purpose of the event was to focus on increased reliance on application of satellite remote sensing and GIS technologies for early warning of hazards as floods and others.


Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Planning, and Development Reform, inaugurated the event.


In his remark, the minister remarked that the natural disasters as floods are a major risk to our sustainable development.


He further added that the Pakistans vulnerability to floods can be minimized through timely and accurate forecasts and early warnings. This system can be established through the increased application of remote sensing for flood modeling, WEB GIS portals development, forecasting and alert systems.


He indicated that SUPARCO has done excellent work in mapping of floods during the year 2010 and subsequently. He hoped that SUPARCO along with Pakistan Meteorology Department will make further advancements for early warning systems and redressal technology based on satellite disciplines.


In his remarks, Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Inomata, said, “Having suffered from many disasters in the past, Japan has continued to develop technologies and expertise for disaster management.
