STAFF REPORT LHR: The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) Punjab has joined hands with SUPARCO for satellite monitoring of air quality and identification of problematic areas in big cities of the province.

According to sources, if executed, the project would provide an effective tool to the toothless department for twisting arms of polluters.

In the first phase, SUPARCO will collect real time data of all brick kilns operated in and around the provincial metropolis. SUPARCO will use GIS Imaging to collect exact location of every single brick kiln and its emission level.

The same data of industrial units operating in Sundar Industrial Estate will also be collected, which will help the EPD to monitor industrial emissions and take action against the polluters.

According to the officials, this project will cover more cities in a later stage with an aim to collect load and location wise data of industrial air emissions, sources in the EPD said. SUPARCO had already executed similar projects in Sindh and Punjab through different clients, they said.

Under this project, SUPARCOs scope of work is collection of air quality data and compilation of the latest relevant studies, air quality measurement of NOx, SO2, TSP/PM10, Ozone, CO and CO2 using USEPA sampling methods, collection of water quality samples and analysis of ground water.
