STAFF REPORT KHI: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) is going to have a new global navigation satellite system (GNSS) with the assistance from Pakistans strategic partner, China. Beijing has been very generous in sharing its satellite technology with Islamabad. The first-ever BeiDou technology application outside of China was recently demonstrated in Pakistan.

According to details, China has further programmes of collaboration with Pakistan in the satellite and space communication technology. “The GNSS will be an addition to Pakistans present satellite communication technology,” an official close to this development told this scribe.

On this theme, a joint two-day event was also held in Karachi which was organised by SUPARCO and China Satellite Navigation Office. The applications of a global navigation satellite system were highlighted. There is a need to get into satellite technology especially in an age of the internet where most things are now being communicated through this channel. Pakistans global navigation satellite system will help it in mapping, surveying, construction and deformation monitoring, transport and aviation management, mining and agriculture sectors, besides in other uses.

The Civil Aviation Authority will also be complying with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) which recommends using GNSS for smooth air transportation.

The SUPARCO wants other technology companies as well as academic and research institutions to invest through venture capitalism in Pakistans satellite communication programme.
