Commercialisation of GM corn seeds allowed sans field trials

STAFF REPORT ISB: The federal government has granted permission to multinational companies for commercialisation of genetically modified (GM) corn seeds in Pakistan, despite the two senior ministers’ claims in the National Assembly that GM crops would never be allowed in the country.

According to sources, the Ministry of Climate Change has awarded licences to different companies including Monsanto and DuPont/Pioneer for the commercialization of GM crops in the country.

STAFF REPORT MULTAN: The Punjab government has provided free fertilizers and pesticides besides vegetables seeds at low price to farmers for cultivation of vegetables at 687 demonstration plots in the province.

PAD initiative to distribute free Disease Resistant wheat seeds to growers

STAFF REPORT FAISALABAD: The Punjab Agriculture Department (PAD) has decided to distribute free of cost wheat seed to 23,838 growers in the province. The Punjab government has allocated an amount of Rs 300 million for this programme. The balloting method will be adapted to enlist the growers who will be provided with the wheat seeds.
