While multinational seed companies led by Monsanto, Pioneer and lately Syngenta are trying hard to get approval for genetically modified Bt Corn/Maize in Pakistan, Poland became the 10th country recently to ban GM corn/maize plantation in Europe. Europe is not a food sufficient region as it imports Corn, Soy beans etc., from outside. In early March, 2012 nine European countries – Belgium, Great Britain, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Ireland, Austria and Slovakia – successfully blocked an effort by the Danish EU presidency to allow expanded cultivation of GM crops in Europe. And around that same time, France imposed its own ban on MON810 because there are serious concerns about this GM food crop.
The population in European countries is well educated. Even in Asia and Australia regions, no country except the Philippines allows GM or Bt Corn/Maize to-date. Concerns about health, cross-pollination, crop refugia, food labeling etc., are not being properly answered. Why?
And why our local scientists are not taking lead in doing research on Pros and Cons of the relevant issues relating to Biotech or GM crops instead of attending seminars sponsored by Pioneer and Monsanto?
