Tooth regeneration – no more a distant dream

Tooth decays and damages are very common among people of all ages. Nowadays common practice by dentist is to remove the decay and fill in the teeth cavity by with some durable material such as cement, metal or plastic. But now there is a much better treatment for tooth decays and damage i.e., tooth regeneration by the help stem cell technology. Stems cells have a unique ability to differentiate into any type of cell thus they can act as important tool for tooth regeneration.

Cavities, root canal, synthetic crown, artificial teeth are all the treatment being used to treat tooth decays and damages. A new method is tooth regeneration by the help of stem cells. Paul Sharpe and his colleagues tested rats for regeneration of tooth. This technique does not have much history as it is a recent technique.

Recently, regeneration of tooth is accomplished in a rat model by chemotactic homing of host endogenous cells, and without cell delivery. There are two type of approaches for tooth regeneration i.e., based on growing cells on scaffolding materials, and other approach is reproducing the developmental processes of embryonic tooth formation.

Till date, the process of tooth regeneration is still in infancy stage as no such work is done on human. However, some of the genes involved in crown formation has been identified. But regeneration of murine tooth has encouraged scientist to work on this subject more to come up with a way to regenerate whole tooth in humans as well.

Regeneration of tooth will provide a permanent solution to the tooth decays and damage but it still not in practice and scientist need to investigate ways to speed up the process to rapid development of tooth development in human. Since, bioengineered mouse teeth take few weeks for growth, implantation while human teeth take many months and years to create a functional tooth. Tooth’s root development is a very complex process which needs more advanced and efficient biotechnological techniques. There is time for tooth regeneration in human to become a reality.
