STAFF REPORT ISB: ISLAMABAD: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved two mega water and power projects amounting to Rs172 billion to meet the fast growing water and power needs of Pakistan.

One project named as Karachi Water Supply Project (Phase I)-260 MGD (million gallons per day) from the east bank of Keenjhar Lake in District Thatta to Karachi worth Rs. 25.5 billion is to be completed in four years. The water project is aimed at enhancing water supply to meet the water demand of the 18.5 million inhabitants of Karachi besides improving the existing water supply system. Total water demand of Karachi stands at approximately 1000 MGD, whereas the total existing supply is 650 MGD, resulting in a shortfall of 350 MGD.

The second project is 6600mw Gaddani Park Coal Power Project in Balochistan. The project envisages development of related infrastructure facilities at Pakistan power Park at Gaddani for establishing 6600MW class of imported Coal Fired Power Generation plants based on supercritical, pulverized coal platform technology. Under the proposed project, marine related infrastructure for 6600 MW will be constructed at the total cost of Rs.146.60 billion.

Approval to these two water and power projects was made during a meeting of the ECNEC, which was held at the P House chaired by Federal Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar.
