STAFF REPORT ISB: The ICT initiative for girls empowerment organised by the Ministry of Information Technology in collaboration with Bait-ul-Maal, Universal Services Fund and Microsoft has been launched here. Under this initiative, USF and Bait-ul-Maal (PBM) have signed an MoU to impart latest computer knowledge to girls across the country.


PBM Managing Director Abid Waheed and CEO USF signed the agreement.


The event was also witnessed by Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar and State Minister for IT Anusha Rehman. According to the agreement, in initial phase Microsoft would upgrade 50 IT labs of PBM with state-of-the-art facilities to impart latest computer knowledge to girls across the country.


The programme comprises four Cs including computing, coding, communication and coaching. In the first phase 50 labs will be equipped where around 5,000 girls will get benefit by the first round.


Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar said that PTCL would provide free of cost internet facility while five laptops would be given to outstanding students.


Anusha Rehman said the project was a step to empower women and “under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif we are heading toward socio-economic progress. She further said the government was planning to scale ICT for girls initiative and make it available to a wider section, adding “It will also be launched in our Telecentres.” She said girls trained in software skills could earn a livelihood by working even from homes.
