The regional government aimed to set up foremost waste to energy projects across Punjab mainly in six major cities Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Sialkot within a year.

The minister Abdul Aleem Khan disclosed that Rawalpindi and Islamabad will also be included in the scheme. The government will also souvenir a waste to energy project to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government for Peshawar.

The minister said that “The initiative will substitute dumping sites where garbage will produce electricity, gas and other usable products.” Preliminary estimates recommend that the project will help in reducing 2,000 tons of Lahore city’s metropolitan solid waste per day to produce electricity.

Punjab confined government and community department (LGCDD) have been heading for to set up the plants. LGCDD Secretary Captain (retd) Saif Anjum gave a meticulous presentation to the participants about the project and shared past experiences.

Clean and Green Punjab Campaign

For waste to energy projects long term planning has been devised, which will be part of the Clean and Green Punjab Campaign. The project will be initiated with the cooperation of Chinese and other foreign companies.

In November 2018, the Punjab government signed an agreement with a Chinese company to establish a 40MW waste to energy plant on 52 hectares around Lahore.

In order to make sure a healthy environment for citizens and refrain smash up to the soil in the six cities, other urban areas will also be included in the scheme, the senior minister adding that the project will be carried out in each district of the Punjab province in the afterward.
