STAFF REPORT MULTAN: The Punjab government has fixed the wheat production target at 19.5 million tons for 2015, said Agriculture Executive District Officer Shafqat Hussain Bhatti.

“Action would be taken against adulterated seed and fertilizer mafia,” said Bhattti while addressing a seminar on wheat production technology in Multan.

He advised the growers to use approved and recommended seed varieties and fertilizer for maximum wheat yield.

In his remarks, Agriculture District Officer Habib Akhtar Jillani said that 19,430,000 ton wheat was produced in Punjab last year just because of timely cultivation and use of normal fertilizer.

He said that the period from November 10 to 30 was favourable for sowing all wheat varieties. The farmers could get better results and more production by sowing Faisalabad-2008, Aas-11 and Punjab-11 before November 10, he said, adding that the favourable sowing time for Shafaq-2006, Farid-2006 and Milat-11 was after November 30.

Wheat expert Dr Liaqat Ali asked the growers to cultivate wheat across ridges for the desired results. Plant Protection Deputy Director Dr Kashif Nadeem, Punjab Agriculture Information Assistant Director Naveed Asmat Kahloon and others also spoke on the occasion.
